Wood

We are first and foremost a producer of wooden furniture. All wood used by Kai Kristiansen & Friends is hardwood purchased from responsible sawmills with whom we have long, established relationships. Due to the design and quality of our products, we only use new wood - never recycled wood.

Please note that not all furniture we produce is available in all the wood sorts we work with. As wood is a natural product, variations in color and pigmentation will occur. Wooden furniture will also change appearance over time as it is affected by the environment in which it is placed.

We use Europpean oak and Amercian walnut mainly, from forests which are managed according to the Forest Act. This law promotes sustainable forestry incorporating ecological, social and economic considerations. The law also stipulates that indigenous wood supplies must not only be sustainable, but, by law, also increase in a managed way.

The oak trees we use are somewhere between 150-250 years old. Oak has shorter fibers than ash but is also a very strong wood type. Oak is however easier to work with than ash. It has an open surface and the fibers are visible and touchable even when painted.

The walnut we use is also around 150 years old. Walnut has a wide color spread ranging from light to dark brown. It is a very irregular wood type which makes it difficult to foresee which colors the wood has before opening the logs.

Furniture from Kai Kristiansen & Friends is available in various surface treatments. This gives you the possibility of choosing what suits you the best. However, not all surface treatments are possible on all wood types.

DUNES®

By Sørensen Leather

DUNES® is an exclusive Aniline leather with a natural, rustic look and a sublime, almost velvety tactile feel. Achieved via a process of sanding and applying a special type of leather oil to the surface. At the same time, DUNES® boasts a matt look that’s raw with a touch of understated elegance.

Part of DUNES®’ extra appeal are the natural markings which bring a unique personality to each hide. Colour tones will also vary from hide to hide and within each individual hide. Watch for a beautiful patina that will appear over time as a result of the leather’s usage, exposure to daylight and interior lighting. With use, the leather will become shinier and smoother over time.

DUNES® collection has received the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. A highly-respected certification verifying that it meets their rigorous requirements regarding the environment, use of energy and resources. Additionally, as a result of meeting a separate set of criteria, DUNES® can be specified as one of the components as part of the certification process for a design to be awarded the EU Ecolabel (EU Blomst in Danish).

Avoid any chemical products, such as saddle soap, other leather cleaners or household products. Protect from direct sunlight, excessive heat and sharp objects

The care and maintenance of leather will always depend on the specific way in which it is used, the conditions of use and how often it is used.

OPTIMO

By Sørensen Leather

OPTIMO is a chrome-free Protected leather.

Surprisingly firm, very durable and practical, OPTIMO has a light surface coating that makes it water resistant, designed to protect the leather from any stains, fading or wear and tear over time.

It’s no coincidence that our name for this collection is OPTIMO. It’s the ideal, optimal leather that can be used for almost any type of furniture or design concept. The fine surface pattern gives it a uniform look, which also makes it easy to work with.

OPTIMO collection has received the LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® certification. A scientifically-founded, worldwide testing and certification system for leather. Based on international test standards and other recognised test processes, the certification involves around 100 test parameters. Including numerous environmentally-relevant substances and chemicals harmful to the health. Care & cleaning
As a natural material, leather requires looking after. If you care for the leather in the right way, it will become even more beautiful over time. Here are a few tips:
Our leather is ready for you to use as soon as it arrives, so there is no initial need to treat it or clean it. Over time if you see the need for cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner once or twice a month with a soft brush to remove any dust. Once or twice a year for thorough cleaning, use the foam from soap flakes stirred in warm water. Apply the foam with a dry soft cloth, minimizing any contact with water. Avoid bar soap, saddle soap, leather cleaners, household detergents or chemical products. Protect from direct sunlight, excessive heat and sharp objects

The care and maintenance of leather will always depend on the specific way in which it is used, the conditions of use and how often it is used.
